CMEC: Census of Medical Examiner & Coroner Offices

Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices

The purpose of the Census of Medical Examiner and Coroner Offices (CMEC) is to produce national statistics on the workload, staffing, budgets, and resource needs of the agencies that conducted medicolegal death investigations during 2023. The 2023 CMEC was developed with coroners, medical examiners, and other subject matter experts who helped refine the survey to reduce burden while producing meaningful, relevant, and timely statistics to serve the medicolegal death investigation community. The 2023 CMEC will address emerging issues and reveal how these statistics have changed since the CMEC was last conducted in 2018. Given the critical role of medical examiners and coroners to our nation's public health and public safety communities, it is important to understand their current resources and operations nationwide. Please participate in this important study.

CMEC is endorsed by the following professional organizations: The American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), the International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners (IACME), the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) and the Society of Medicolegal Death Investigators (SOMDI). Letters detailing their support can be found here:  ABMDI, IACME, NAME, NSA, and SOMDI.

Please enjoy this video highlighting leaders from the MEC community as they explain the unique data that CMEC provides in comparison to other surveys.
